Before you do anything else, name the problem

The bill can wait five more minutes while you decide whether you are dealing with provider billing, insurance, or collections.
The bill is still with the hospital or clinic
Good. You still have room to get the itemized bill, ask for a hold, and attach a real person to the account before it hardens.

If the balance depends on a denial, a pending claim, or a coding issue, this is not a clean patient bill yet.

Go next to Your Rights, then Insurance.

A collector has already contacted you
The tone changes, but the order does not. Start with proof, not panic.

Go next to Collections and stay with validation.
